VALLADOLID – PASTEL DREAMS

VALLADOLID – SAKI ‘ VAL

Valladolid is located in the center of the Yucatan Peninsula ,two hours away from Tulum.A big part of Valladolid’s charm is that it is not over run with tourists, most people only stop here for a few hours en-route to nearby Chichen Itza, and at times you will feel like you have the whole pastel colored town to yourself! The city was named one of Mexico’s “Pueblos Magicos” (magical towns), which is a distinction given to towns in Mexico based on their natural beauty, cultural riches or historical relevance to the country. The city was formed in the 1540s on top of the former Mayan town of Zaki named after the Cenote Zaki.

Convento de San Bernardino de Siena

Valladolid is home to one of the most beautiful and impressive monasteries located in the colonial Yucatan, the Convento de San Bernardino de Siena. Located just minutes away from downtown, this majestic monastery is located in the neighborhood of Barrio de Sisal. Build by the Spaniards in the 1522, this majestic architecture doubled as a fortress and church, the monastery was build on top of an underwater river and cenote. The walls of the monastery are made out of mortar and are covered in a pastel pink color, creating a beautiful atmosphere through out the halls and various rooms.
